Ok so i got really mad with windows today so i backed up all my important files, documents, music, tv shows, and porn and downloaded the latest version of UBUNTU
and fuck man its freaking awesome, last time I had linux it was on a computer that could barely run!, this thing rocks, and this latest version of UBUNTU is so much easier to use than when i had it last time, last time installing stuff was kind of a pain, and you had to tinker with the terminal and blahblahblah, this time alot of the things it does for you, i need to install a music writting program for windows on here pretty soon but that shouldn't take to long, and it doesn't seem to be all that difficult!
and the best part is, when i was running windows, my computer was always really hot, temperture wise, and it would shut down because it would get to hot, and it wasn't even doing anything, with ubuntu, it doesn't get as hot as it used to! when i was running windows i couldn't put the laptop on my lap because it would burn my balls after 10 minutes...i have been sitting here for over an hour and the bottom of the laptop still feels cool.
I was running a 32 bit vista, and now im running a 64 ubuntu, and i have a bunch of the cool graphic features turned on and its preetty niffty
im pretty happy with it..YAY!!

First of all, I think Linux is great. I love the open source stuff and UBUNTU is cool, I agree.
But why to people have such problems with windows? I have been running windows vista on my machine that I built for the last 2.5 years with zero problems. Yeah, I admit that its not the best OS, but I have never hated it, its never screwed me, its never crashed, etc. Maybe its because I am a responsible PC user. Its like owning a car, you have to maintain it. I update drivers, install new versions of software, download critical updates, routinely defrag my hard drive, back up my data, run weekly virus scans, don't download suspicious files, don't run unneeded programs and services.
I venture to say that most problems people have are not due to windows, but rather good ole pebkac (google it if you don't know what that means).
I use windows and other MS products because directly correlates to my work as an engineer. I do lots of work at home, remotely connect to my offices network, and its all just easier on windows. If that wasn't the case, things would probably be a little different.
Enjoy your ubuntu.

I've yet to try Linux. I've grown up always running Windows and I never have a single problem that people have with it. I'm on a 64 bit Vista for about 2 or 3 years, and I haven't crashed once. I've froze and all that, but guess what? My fault for running 87 programs or so.
It's just as Jeremy says. If you maintain it, it will work. It's the people who don't know how to run a computer that buy a PC that ruin Windows' reputation.

well i sorta maintained it, but after my subscription to all those things you have to buy to maintain it ranout,..it all went down hill from there, haha,
and another big reason i got it is, nobody really uses it , so then when they see my computer they would be like....damn hes a nerdy bad asssss

and another big reason i got it is, nobody really uses it , so then when they see my computer they would be like....damn hes a nerdy bad asssss i figured, thats the main reason anyone uses linux. That's really not the main reason people use it. Most folks are tired of paying Microsoft or Apple for products they can get for free and is more secure. Linux certaintly does have some drawback as far as compatability with the popular programs (ie MS office and instant support for PC games) but there are alternatives to even those programs. (Open office and WINE to play games). Open office is even available for Windows and Mac so it is truely "open-source" in my opinion. Another reason is that people are just frustrated with the issues that they've experienced with Windows or Mac. While you maybe correct that a properly amiltained computer will be good to you, there are some that it doesn't seem to matter how much maintenance you do it Windows will still crash. Simply installing an update to a band new Dell computer for power DVD totally crashed a co-workers laptop. Then his Blu-Ray player wouldn't recognize the disk. Dell's solution was to reformat the compputer and to not perform the updates. Additionally, Windows is just plain huge when it comes to OS disk usage and system requirement to make it run efficiently. Given that now-a-days hard drive and RAM prices are low and size it high it shouldn't be an issue but to some people it still is. The latest Linux still runs quickly even on low end machines. Making it a good alternative to having to go out and purchase a new computer just to keep up with the latest Windows and security features. Plus, to get the next version of Windows or Mac OS you have to pay for it again. Linux it just a distro upgrade and your done. Free and simple. Linux can connect to your office as well. I doubt it'll run CAD but it can do all the remote connections, file management and stuff that your Windows PC will. Additionally, if there's something in Windows youjust have to have (Office, CAD, iTunes) you can run Windows in a free virtual machine. Giving you all the Windows functions and it'll actually operate faster. I've experienced that first hand. I'm not disagreeing with the notion that Linux in a niche market but to say it's used just by people that want to try to impress someone is unfair. The same could be said of all the bleeding edge hardware/software folks that run Windows. It's a Bill Gates wold until Linux can prove differently. I think ubuntu is doing well and may someday take some marketshare from MS. Heck, even MS admitted in their last quartely report that Linux is a threat to their desktop market. Just my 2 cents

All of what you just said Rick proves my point.
File management, CAD, all my other engineering programs won't run properly on linux or mac. Therefore it is a great disservice for me to use linux, as is the case for most of the world. I a good nerd in my own right, but practicality compels me to be a windows user. Most of the world is too stupid to know that open office or google docs can take care of all their needs. All of my personal documents are on google docs, not MS office. But I need MS office because of work. And frankly, the complex engineering spreadsheets the I use for work could not run on open office calc or google spreadsheet. I NEED excel for that.
It applies to other stuff as well. Most people have been overwhelmed by the apple kool aid. Itunes is great, ipods are great, mac books are great, but you can do all the stuff they claim on a windows pc, or a pc running linux, or a zune, or plenty of other products. People are just too stupid to realize that or just think computers are such a foreign entity that it is beyond them to comprehend. Credit apple marketing for exploiting the fact that people are inherently computer dumb. Anything that can be done on a PC can be done on a mac, and visa versa.
I venture to say that Linux is just as much as a hassle as windows. Sure for computer geeks, we can recognize the pros and cons, but what is you every day clown burg going to do with linux? Nothing. The fact that it is free only reaches as far as computer nerds as well. Sure you or I Rick could install it on our computers, but could our wives? Or your non-nerd buddy down the street who just wants a computer to get on the internet, check his fantasy football, and edit some word docs? The truth is that Linux to those people and pretty much most of the world just not an option. In order for them to get a pc with windows, then can spend less than $500 at dell.com or at costco or walmart. They open the box, plug it in and they are ready to go. To get a mac, double that at least. They can't just go get linux. They need their friendly local computer nerd to do it for them. And that means building a computer from scratch or buying a PC and installing linux, which they can't do on their own. Thus to even get to linux its a huge hassle.
Now, I fully realize that the situation I just described is due to the fact microsoft has a stranglehold on the OS world. It could fully be linux that was the main OS, and we would all be better off.
I would prefer a world where windows, mac, and linux had a more balanced market share and people were really allowed to pick what best suites them. You aren't allowed to do that now. You are forced to be a windows guy most of the time (and a linux guy in your spare nerdy time) if you are like me and operate in the technical world, or choose to be a stupid trendy fuck by buying a mac, or chose to be the aloof or nerdy guy who uses linux.
I'd like to see the kind of competition in other realms of the world of computing, but the the case of the internet, google is god. Google deserves the monopoly is has, windows does not.
/rant
More secure is a misnomer. It comes down to this: if mac or linux were are widely used as windows, they would have the exact same issues.

Linux is truly something. But, I've just been sticking with XP. I even have a 64 bit disc of it when I get 4gb of ram or more. Part of it is I personally don't have the money to go out and buy a new OS any time soon. And, I dislike Vista. I've had plenty of experience with it to realize it has some nice features, but it isn't worth the money I'd have to shell out for it.
If Linux were to get better game support I would switch over at the blink of an eye. Rick knows what he's talking about.

I wasn't ranting but meerly adding to the discussion. However I do need to point out a mis statement you made. Linux is available from dell preinstalled. It's also an option on some netbooks by major manufactures. There's another company called system 76 that specifically works with Linux. If people were looking for a preinstalled option it is available. It;s just like you said though. The apple cool-aid is great and Bill Gates owns the world. as far as the security issue goes you're partially corret. Most everything I've read still gives Windows a disadvantage mainly because security wasa an after thought for them whereas Linux spawned from Unix in which security was forefront due to being a server OS.
Again, meerly adding to the discussion. You made very valid points.

I was just ranting for no reason, nothing specifically at you Rick. My main problem is with people who are brain washed by the mac/apple world. They don't bother to think for themselves.

Off of the subject of Linux, I have already received a copy of Windows 7 from my school for free (Thank God for UT, MS relations). I have to admit it is a very nice OS, I haven't had much time to mess with it, but I like it much better than vista.
