The Cake is a lie come from the game Portal.
Throughout playing, you are promised a cake at the end for completing all the levels of the game.
While playing, you can find things in game, writing on the walls, that says stuff like, "The cake is a lie."
The cake is a lie refers to the promise of a reward for the completion of something.
i.e. Your boss promises you a raise for selling 100 products.
You sell the 100 products, and he doesn't give you a raise.
The cake is a lie.
