there is a program called
youtube downloader
it lets u download videos from youtube and it converts them for you into anything...from video..to just audio
its a fantastic program and free
and there is also a program called replay media catcher, you have to "pay for it" it lets you download any streaming video in FLV form

I had a script that let me dl youtube videos.
Problem was exactly that though, that it saved them as videos.

there's a firefox addon called download helper. It lets you download any media that's located on the page that you're on. It's nice.
