i heard from a couple of people who hacked Halo 2 that the sword is a one hit kill

yes, the sword can be a one hit kill if done properly. The regular melee attack will take several hits to kill with the sword. If you use the right trigger at the right moment, you will lunge and kill in one hit. The article explains it.
