You see rory, the problem with halo 2 is, that after the update the software, in my opinion, became a little corrupt, so when you play against a connection host now there is much more of a difference, but before the update, i did not notice any difference.

Halo 2 doesnt use a Microsoft owned server. In order for it to work, One xbox is designated "Host xbox" This means, that all data is relayed back and forth between this box. Because of the time it takes for this to happen, some of the boxes are a little behind because the data is relayed from: Host--->Player------->Host-------> other players.Because of the time it takes fr the ENTIRE process to occur u r significantly behind. So, the host has these advantages, because he skips the steps of relaying data back to the host, his box is receiving less data, which takes less CPU time and that gives him the"Host advantage". This can also be used to explain the concept of stand-by. THe standby button causes a lag of data. This means, that the host is sending data in short bits Thus, not allowing everything to move at its Natural speed. The host does not lag out tho, because it is sending data in enough packets to stay online. But, to an extent, in any other game that does NOT USE HOST CONNECTION, this could not happen. Because bungie decided to use a dynamic host system, they can keep the game from ending when host leaves. This is the process of selecting a new host. Now, here is where the original stand-by applied. The game thought that host had left the game, so it begins its process of host switching (blue-screen) Because the standbyer is not directly connected anymore, he can move around freely, thus affecting the data he is tansmitting to all the other players. While the other players are in Blue Screen, the host can do what he wants with them. Host for example, can kill a member of Blue team. Then, he can stop standbying. THe game will see his connection and his IP. The game then recognizes he had host and the game will give it back to him. The other players will shortly after, exit Blue screen and the data relay begins again. Host wil start sending his augmented game data to the other Xboxes. Blue 1's xbox will get the data that he has been assasinated by the host, and it will kill him and give host's team points accordingly. This data of Blue's death will also be sent to other boxes andsow that Blue 1 has died. None of this would be possible if Bungie had their own Game servers... O well. Now, let me step into the topic of "Bridging". A Bridge is a common Xbox Live setup. This setup requires two ethernet cards, crossover ethernet cables, and some basic networking knowledge. With a bridge set up, u are almost guaranteed host. This in itself is not cheating. In fact, if u can, I'd advse it, and then u come play with me. I'm sick of getting lagged out bu a cheating host. Anyway, a form of software exists that allows u to block IP addresses from communicating with ur network. (Kinda Like a parental control) The host can use this program on his PC to block the IP adresses of other players in the game, thus stopping their packet relay with the host. When a player does not communicate with the host, he lags out. People are now winning games using this method. Two forms of cheating could have been stopped if Bungie used their own servers. So, to answer ur questions, No, host doesnt exist in other games, mainly because most games use public servers. Or privately owned ones. But, their still Dedicated SERVERS not xboxes. That's why, in Counterstrike, or other Xbox Live titles, host advantage isnt noticeable, because there is no single xbox that has host. it's the server, not the box. and finally, to stop modding in ranked games, Bungie can just take the new maps off of the playlists. The new maps are soft moddable, so why do we play them. Bungie didnt even NEED to patch the game, they could have just taken the new maps off, and let the modders mod in customs or whatever. Now, I'm done. 3 main ways of cheating, and a way to fix all of them. I should work for Bungie. now, u just read alot. o get a snack, u earned it!

That is painful to try to read. Use paragraphs Joe. Also, I think we all know that there are no servers and one person's box is the host of the game.

i think we notice it alot in halo because we play it soo much..that we notice the tiniest details of what is normal and what is host.......
if u were to play a different game online right now u would not beable to tell what is host related and what is normal.....
if u talked to a level 1 brand new never played halo before..then tehy would be like....wtf is host?

Know that I have been paying more attention, you realize how important having a good connection or host is. For example, not only is spartan good, but he gets host probably 80-90% of the time. THe last few days that I have been playing with him, he has gotten host all but 2 games. Having host makes it that much easier for you.
Having a good connection helps you no matter if you are host or not. I have noticied it tremendously after my move. I can't get kills like I used to. I don't care what anyone says, I know its because of my connection. You don't just start sucking all of a sudden. It is easy to realize that when you are in the yellow and red all the time. Things have gotten a little better since I got my speed upgraded, but the traffic in my neighborhood is so great that I never get the speed I am supposed to.
SO imagine if everyone had a good connection, an equal connection and things were fair. Halo 2 on xbox live would be totally different. I really truely think that the thing that gives you the most advantage on xbox live is your connection. You can easily be out BR'ed by someone worse than you but who has a better connection. I am constantly sniping people, hitting them, but it doesn't really hit them because of my bs connection. I even get headshots when I am not expecting it because I thought I missed them. I know it is my connection because it didn't used to be like that for me.
I am hate playing with a shitty connection and feel sorry for people who have bad connections and don't realize what it is like playing with a good one.
