Rory, the maximum length for a lan cable is 300 feet without a router, switch or hub in-between. Make sure you do not exceed that if you're going to run a cable or you'll experience a laggy connection, if you get a connection at all.

i think im going to go wireless....or my dad said that i coudl run the cord though the roof..and that would shorten the lengs from about 200 feet to about 20ish..........the only bad part is....i have to get dirty and get into the crawl space that hasn't been opened in like 20 years and im scared ill get eaten, and then feed the cord this way and that way until i can finally get it into my room...........im frigtened

The wireless adapter is about 100 bucks. I'd run the cable...you'll have a better connection that way.

300 feet max without a router, switch or hub in between. This means that a single length of cable can only be 300 feet for cat 5, cat 5e or cat 6 cabling. I'm sure you can run fiber optic cable for miles with out any problems but hard copper does have resistance and will degrade the signal strength of some distances unless you boost the transmit power. There is no settings to boost the transmit power on a router or network card so through tests it was founf that the max length for the cables is 300 feet.
