vista deleting itself

a friend of mine has the exact same computer as me, and we bought it on the same day, and vista deleted itself? what would cause it to do that?

the computer boots up and says...insert windows disk...what does that mean?

it means that the operating system is probably corrupted and it needs to try to repair itself. If it's not that old have him take it back to the store to see what they can do. It shouldn't be that way unless he did something to it.
