My 20gb HDD shows 14 gigs free and its new. I realize that some storage may be lost through formatting and things like that, but I shouldn't be using 6 gb already. I went through the storage section and deleted the free content M$ packed onto the drive, is there anything else I should know about or is the HDD at its right size?

I do not own a 360, but I am pretty good with computers. I think, and this is just a guess, that your the 360 acts very similar to a regualr PC. In that it creates a partition in the hard drive. It is kinda like in your PC. You have a C drive and a D drive. The D drive I think has all of the operating system info and stuff on it. You lose jsut a a tad bit of space though.

That's what I was assuming... but I don't consider 6 gb a tad bit of space. That's why I was wondering what the deal was.

Typically you'll lose about 2-4 gig just from formatting alone. The 360 is now different I would suspect. Also, they do push updates so you'll lose space from that plus any game saves and profiles you make also take space. Then you start downloning live arcade games and their saves take space as well.
Normal free space for mine when I don't have that much extra content is around 12-13 GB free. I have a bunch of live arcade goames though. If you're worried, go drop the 100+ bucks for the 120 GB Hard drive before you put too much on the old drive. You'll never have space woes after that.
