So I wanted to share my experience with my 360 repair and let you all know what to do when this happens to you. So, as you may or may not remember from my post inthe general board, my 360 stopped reading my games. It turned out to be a bad drive IMO but I had to send it in. So, I called MS, did their toubleshooting with the tech any they said send it in. They sent me a box and paid shipping both ways. This was actually cool but it took forever for them to get me the box.
Anyway, MS sent me back a replacement box instead of my original. Now, that is cool and all but here's the kicker. All of your content downloads, themes, gamer pics and games are linked to your gamertag you download them with and the serial number of the console you were logged into at the time of download. This is for anti-piracy so you do not share your paid content with your friends without it being on your box or you signed into Live.
Here's the crappy part, when they replace your box, you get a new serial number, rendering all the content you downloaded useless if you are not signed into Live on the account that downloaded them. This goes for all the accounts on the box. So for instance, Brandon and I share my 360 for the time being. He can no longer play ANY on the full Live arcade games on the box unless my account is signed into live.
Here's the current fix MS offers. You have to create a new live silver account. Then you must call 1-800-4myxbox and have them credit the necessary amount of MS points to the silver account so you redownload all the content you previously purchased to make it authorized for the new box. This will open up all the content you redownload for every account on the box to use on- or off-line.
The process includes talking to a tech who will verify a bunch of info to include your repair reference number, your old gamertag, new gamertag (the silver acct) and billing address. They'll look up your download information and tally the MS points for everything you spent before the repair. Mine was 8900 points. Then they'll put you on hold to speak with a supervisor who will "escalate" the issue to MS. Then you'll have to wait for 5-7 business days for MS to call you back to receive the credits. If you miss the call they'll leave a reference number that you can use when you call into xbox support again to schedule a call back time.
There's currently a 38 page thread about this very topic in the xbox forums. You can view it here.
Basically MS has been "working" on this for over a year and there's still no resolution other than the one explained above. I'll be glad to get my games unloked again but I don't think I'll be using all the points for the content downloads since they work while I'm signed into live anyway. I have about 1800 MS points from Chromehounds that I can spend elsewhere.
