Have you tried connecting your computer directly to the cable modem to see if you can connect?
Also, if you're using the same computer you had elsewhere, did you have to set-up the proxy server address for connectivity somewhere else? That could interfere with your connection to the internet if there's setting there.
Check in internet explorer under the tool>internet options>connections tab the select LAN settings. Make sure the use proxy server box is unchecked.
For Firefox the setting to check is under tools>options>advanced. Make sure the setting is set to directly connect to the internet or automatic selection.
Just so you know, unless your using a very expensive layer 3 swtich you cannot use a swithc to share the connection straight from the modem. The only way to use a switch is to have her desktop with 2 network cards and run the internet setup wizard and set her computer to share the connection. The cat 5 from the modem goes to one NIC and the other NIC will connect to the switch. I believe the connections will need to be bridged for connectivity but the wizard may do that for you.
When usign the router did you have the settings in the WAN setup for the information to log-in to the service? (the log-in, password and the proper setting for the cable connection) Also, did you have the DHCP server turned on to give out addresses to the other machines? I would also check to make sure the MAC addess filter was not enabled as that can block the NICs for any computer not listed in the exceptions.
Some people have issues if a static IP address is assigned to all the computers. Make sure yours is set to automatically receive the IP address from the DHCP server. I would set all the other computers to do the same. You can reserve addresses in teh routers DHCP server if someone really wants a specific address. Statis IPs should work btw but like I said, sometimes they cause issues.
Try all this Peter then if it still doesn't work, please post the router information and I'll see what else I can come up with.
