can somebody please explain to me why i just bought 256 ram and went from having 155 mb to having the 128 stick plus the 256, so its something like 370 something. Why is it that my halo videos that i dl still run very boggy and choppy, to me it seems it is the same exact as it was.

No improvement whatsoever and the guy i bought it from said i would see signifigant improvment, WTF!

If you're running windows xp then significant improvement would be seen with a total of 512 MB. Most likely, because I do not know your computer specs, you have a integrated video card. This card usually does not have any ram independent of the system ram so it "shares" with the system ram. Basically, it takes away a portion of the system memory to use as video memory. This degrades system performance.

Also, the rotation spedd of your hard drive can effect system performance as well as spyware. I would suggest running a disk clean-up, then defrag. Also, download and install the lasest version of spybot search and destroy. that can be found here. Make sure you get the most current detection rules, it'll prompt you the first time it's run, and immunize your system. I would suggest running spybot before doing the defrag.

The accumulation of temporary internet files and cookies also slow down the system. As well as a full hard drive.

If you have a separate video card then you may need to upgrade the drivers. I have a feeling that my first thoughts are correct.

Anyway, adding more system ram to 512 or more will help more than just boosting to 384MB total system ram. If it is an integrated video card you might have the option to increase the amount of the system ram allocated to the video card. You can do this in the display properties.

Just so you know the minimum amount of ram to run windows xp is 128MB and recommended is 256MB. I try not to run it on anything less than 512MB and if I have to I won't go less than 384MB.

but i didn't have anything else running at all, no aim, no virus detection or firewalls, not even mozilla opened up. just the windows media player. i would think that increasing the ram by 256 frags shouldn't make viewing videos (saved on the harddrive) smoother?

My computer is completely clean I just reformated it like last week, i have ran the spybot and adaware programs like a couple days ago. The computer should be fine as far as spyware and viruses go I would think.

Maybe its becuase the processer 1.10 ghz?

This after noon the computer did restart and acted like it wasn't taking the ram well, so i took it out and put the original 128 stick back in.

If it wasn't taking the ram well ( not sure if that is the right way to say it )
then would it still register or recognize the stick. Or could it recognize the stick and still not use it properly if its not compatable with my system?

You still didn't say if you have an integrated video card. This makes all the difference in the world...trust me.

Anyway, yes the ram could have been incompatible with your system. I'm wondering why you took out 128 to put in 256 though? Does your system only have 2 memory slots? The processor speed is fine. It's has to be a setting for the video somewhere. Have you tried other videos to see if maybe it's a problem with that particular video?

Try to post as much as you can about your system configuration. Manufacturer, model number stuff like that. I'll try to look it up to see if there's some setting I can help you adjust.

at first i took out the 128 cuz i didn't know which one it was, then i put in 128 and 256 and had 300 sumthing, then after the computer craashed and did that blue screen thing it does when the ram is weird, I took out the 256 and put back in the 128 and 50 I am currently using this

i don't know how to check and see what kind of video card i have. Do you know anything about realvnc?
perhaps i could let you fix my computer up you know tweak it or whatever ;D

Never heard of realvnc. So I take it your computer isn't a Dell, HP, Compaq, E-Machine or gateway. To find out if you have an integrated video card you can look at the back of your computer. If the connection for the monitor is up with the USB and other connectors then it's an integrated video card. If the connection is down in the expansion slots then it's a separate card.

If you have a manual for the computer it'll tell you exactly what kind of RAM you'll need to upgrade your computer.

Can you tell me what kind of ram i need, how much is max , like the specs of my motherboard.

and also I was thinking about buying a new computer, lol, cuz this one blows hard i think. I found one that someone recomended and i can handle the price I'll post the link to it. I wanted to ask you what the upgrade capactiy is on it becuase i can't figure out what the max ram, max processer, and how many ram slots the mother board has.

they don't really give you any ideas of what kind of upgrade capacity you have. a year from now will i be able to buy a 5 ghz processer and it be compatable, will i be able to upgrade to 4gigs of ram if i wanted to , etc.

First off I have to ask...why is your user account i4spi Luigi? Struck me as funny.

As far as upgrades go on the old computer, you caould upgrade the follow old components without much trouble

old

add the 256 to the 160 to total 416MB if it still acts funny then it's not compatible with the other ram/motherboard

add a video card to return the shared memory to the system (most likely an AGP 8x card)

Upgrading the processor is sort of tricky because you have to make sure the motherboard can support it. Since you do not know the motherboard manufacturer I cannot tell you what processors would be compatible.

You could probably do better with a newer computer but I would stay away from the Dell you posted. Reasons why:

Celeron processors suck. They are low end processors that are not meant for gaming.

The upgrade capcbility for any computer is limited now-a-days but that one would be stuck with only Celeron processors for upgrade and as soon as they change the manufacturing technology(which is soon) you'd have to update the motherboard to support the new processor technology.

The max amount of ram is only 2 GB for a non-64 bit processor. This would never allow your dream of 4 GB of RAM.


My suggestion is to look around. I buy refurbished E-machines that are far better than the dell you posted. The only thing that they do not come with is a monitor.

Refurbished systems are ones that may be open boxes or ones that had problems and were replaced then repaired. I have 3 of these and we've never have aproblem with any one of them. They come with all the disks required to restore it back to out of the box if you mess it up.

Look around if you're considering a new computer. You can get a good deal for better hardware if you look.
