i am writting this email from my dads computer because mine wont turn on
this is what i did
i took a 60 gb hard drive from my old old old computer and i decided to put it in my computer so i could have more memory
i cracked open my computer and i didn't really know what i was doing....so i took the cord that said master (or something on it) and followed it until i found something that said slave...(it was long) i connected it into the back of the hard drive.i saw that the hard drive that ws already connected had another cord in it...so i found a cord that looked like that and plugged it in
i reconected my computer...i turned it on.i heard everything running.but nothing happened.....i figured it was no big deal i just hooked the wrong cord up
so i crack open the omputer again and i figure the cord that said slave was in the right place so i changed the second smaller cord with a different one....i put my computer back together and it didn't even turn on.,....the fan hardly moved
i have tried everything....i have reconnected the cords back exactly how they were.but nothing works.......!!!! i think i fried my computer...
i am willing to accept that my computer is gone ....but is there any way for me to save the hardrive..i had some really important stuff on there?

The hard drive is most likely fine...both of them. What you may have done is overloaded the power supply. Was there a funny burnt smell on the second try? Also, remove the power supply and smell it. If it smells really nasty it's probably no good. The good news is that you can just replace the power supply for around 50-100 US and you'll be back in business. As far as hooking up the hard drives go though here's some guidelines to follow: The power connection for a standard IDE ATA-100/133 hard drive is a large four pin connector. The IDE cable is either a 40 wire or 80 wire flat cable with a red solid or dashed stripe on it. This stripe identifies the number 1 pin. The red stripped side of the cable typically points towards the power connector. The red cable on the power connector typically points towards the IDE cable. The power cable is also flat on one side and rounded on the other to help make it easier to identify the proper way to install it. 1. If you are installing a second hard drive the make sure the jumper settings (located between the power connector and the IDE connection) is set to either cable select (CS) or slave if you are hooking it to the same cable as the primary hard drive. 2. If you are hooking it to the same cable (Secondary IDE Channel) as the cd-rom drive then make sure the jumper is set on cable select or slave. If you do not have anything on the Secondary IDE Channel then set the hard drive to master or cable select. 3. Make sure you have your BIOS set to automatically detect the drive on the IDE Channels. This is the easiest way to ensure your computer will recognize the hard disc. You can enter the values yourself but make sure you enter them correctly becasue if you do not the computer will see it as a smaller or larger drive than it actually is which will cause problems. Here's a rough drawing.

I still think it's funny. At least when i open up my computer I check what you do first, well, except for the time i took apart my old computer which had windows 95 on it in 2002, and it still sucked, but, takin it apart when you have no clue what you are doing either makes you smarter, or everything gets fucked up, and in Rory's case, it is the last one.
