OMG I hate this site, anyways my mom some how got it on her browser, it has become her homepage which is what always happens, and then it stays taht way with a million pop ups everytime you log on to you computer, and I think it installs viruses...anyways her computer is not working and its because of this about:blank website thing. It think it is a virus and I have tried fixing it with AVG free-home-edition virus software, kerio Personal firewall, spyware doctor, and hijackthis.exe...but none of them work and everytime i restart the computer is just like it was before...it could be an MBR virus or something like that, and that is something i dont know how to fix. Any ideas would be helpful before I just reformat the SOB! Thanks, Jon

the about:blank homepage in your case jon is definitly a spyware infection. It is most likely a brower hijack and will take a little creativity to get rid of. There a few steps you can take before you reformat though. About:blank can be a blank page, but is aslo what browser hijacks set your homepage too and then you get eff'ed with pop ups and so forth. There is probably some problems in your registry so we might have to go in there and fix some things. But that is risky if you don't know what you are doing so lets skip that for now. I realize that you have run some virus removal/spyware removal programs. But in my opinioin there are at least two others that you should run: adaware and spybot search and destroyTry running those in safe mode. If you are using windows xp, click start, run, type "msconfig". Click the boot.ini tab, then click the box /safeboot. Or you can restart the computer and tap F8 when you see the BIOS screen. It will then give you some choices, just choose boot in safe mode. While this window is open, click on the startup tab. You will see a list of all programs that will run on startup. UNCHECK ALL OF THEM EXCEPT YOUR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM (and any other that you want to run at start up). There is probably plenty of spyware utilities running as well as useless programs that run in the background and lag down your computer. If you already have done all this, well good for you. Another option is to perform a system restore, but you need windows xp for this. Let me know if any of this helped and we will go from there. We may have to go do some editing in the registry. Also you can do a google search for your problem and you should come across a bunch of threads from technical help forums that might give you more info as well.

I don't think I could have answered this any better so far. I highly recommend the spybot program. I use it on all my computers and it is constantly updated.

Microsoft has a free spyware/adware program that is very effective. Oh, and Jon, in my past experiences the only free software that worked for me is this spyware thing from microsoft. No antivirus programs were effective at all. Thus the most effective antivirus program is Norton antivirus, it is about 50-70 dollars. It actually works very well and is extremely effective.

Okay, right now i am just downloading my moms files on to my PC so that she doesnt loose any pictures...after that I will try spybot/norton (my bro has it) and then if all fails ill get on AIM and try fixing the registry, and the last resort is always the format.

Norton is the best antivirus that i know of, but, McAfee or however you spell it isn't bad either, and the 2 programs that Zangief posted are great free programs that i use in conjuction with the norton, and there are no problems at all.

Hands down, spybot search and destroy is the best spyware removal tool. Its better than any microsoft program and its free. But as always, using it in conjuction with others will make sure you will have the best chance of removing any spyware on your machine.
Jon, since you have hijackthis, if the problem is still around post the report it gives you when you run it. I may be able to identify some problems form seeing the log.
