your best bet for making a montage is not using a webcam. those things suck for trying to record things off tv's. get a video capture device, like me. it should be coming in today. with rick's help and advice, i got the 200 dollar machine for 50 bucks.

ok then, cool. and about cutting clips and whatnot, when you import the video files into Windows Movie maker, you can cut the clips and stuff.

Unfortunately, I'm not very well versed with Windows Movie Maker but from what I understand it's pretty easy to use.
I can tell you that the web cam uses the surrounding light to help with the image quality so if you have an overhead light on try turning it off when recording. This way it'll only use the light projected from the t.v.
As far as the zoom goes, unless you camera has a zoom lens you'll have to physically move it closer to the t.v. to prevent it from capturing your room. Also, try turning the color boost and back light options (if you have those options) off to see if that helps with the brightness.
I can only tell you what works with the Logitech Quickcam Express web cams that we have. Like caesar said the best way is with a capture device.
The following is a cut and paste from the WMM help files:
To split a video or audio clip
In the Contents pane or on the storyboard/timeline, click the clip you want to split.
On the Play menu, click Play Clip, and then click Pause Clip on the Play menu to pause the video at the point you want to split the clip.
-or-
On the monitor, move the playback indicator on the seek bar to the point you want to split the clip.
On the Clip menu, click Split.
To combine a split audio or video clip
In the Contents pane or on the storyboard/timeline, hold down the CTRL key, and then select the contiguous clips you want to combine.
On the Clip menu, click Combine.
The name and property information of the first clip in the group is used for the new clip and the time is adjusted accordingly.
Note
To select consecutive clips, click the first clip, press and hold down the SHIFT key, and then click the last clip. To select one clip at a time, press and hold down the CTRL key, and then click each clip that you want to combine.

There is a USB extension cable that you can buy that'll allow you to move the camera and it will not interfere with the quality you see now.

Phoenix, if I were you I wouldn't even bother to try to record your TV using a webcam. If you even get it to work, it will be horrible quality.

I don't show up anybody, this is a board where we can all contribute to the cause. I just try to find the information that the people are asking for. Zan is right about the quality though, it won't be very good but if that's all you have to work with give it a shot.

right about the quality. that's what i tried to say to him before, but direct wording wasn't used. and i was just messin' around with the whole "showing up" business, cause i am absolutely certain you wouldn't do anything with negative implications. i was just fessing up to my lame excuse of advice.

The quality on the vid he sent me wasnt bad, just, the brightness was overwhelming. Yea, i was messin with Windows Movie Maker, it really isnt hard to learn to use. Just, Webcams aren't the best tv recording devices.
