whenever i sign in for live the first time i turn on my xbox...nothing works...i can see my friends but not messages...it wont let me into matchmaking............however if i am fast i can play i have to wait for my box to get a "network connection erroe" amd if i press trouble shoot it says everything is fine....and then i go to sign in and i have to wait for the network connection error....if i press cancel when that screen comes up, everything works ...why is that??? its done that since day 1

Here's some things to try. If your using DHCP to assign the ip address to the xbox try assigning a static ip address. You can do that in the xbox control panel under network settings. Also, check to see if your router has a gaming mode. If it does make sure it's enabled (turned on). You can also try setting the xbox in the DMZ for the router so it doesn't follow any of the firewall rules. Also try a different cable. There might be a short in the cable that you are using. Let me know what you come up with.

you need to log into the router...you do this by opening a web browser and typing in the address of the router ie 192.168.0.1 is the usual router ip address out of the box. If your dad set it up ask him to log in for you. Otherwise your gonna need to read the book to figure it out. THe gaming mode setting is in one of he menus in the router software. If you post the router information I'll try to find out all the particulars for you.

that ip address is familiar
k when i set this up using windows...i didn't need a password...so either my dad went in and did something recently...or my linux system thinks i need a password.......filling nothing in wont work

Then its not logging in right...do this go to one of your windows computers and do the following:
start then run
type cmd
type ipconfig/all
this will give you the ip address, subnet mask and default gateway for that machine
go to your xbox dashboard then the network settings
pick an ip address in the same sequence of numbers that the computer had
ie if the computer has 129.198.0.4 then try 129.198.0.6
set the subnet mask to whater the one on the pc was (should be 255.255.255.0)
then set the default gateway (the routers IP address) you go that from the pc as well
make sure you tell the xbox to have a static ip instead of the dynamic one
I didn't know that commands for Linux so if you can get the info from your Linux box the process for assigning the IP/Sunbet/Default gateway will still be the same.
Getting the numbers will obviously be different
