Ummm... I think you guys are taking this whole "We lost the Civil war" thing to an extreme. If the south was independent, Then the north would go to war with them and completely own them by having the president set up a blockade so British supply ships couldnt bring materiel and materials to you guys. We've done it before. We'll do it again.
Wow, do you not realize that in terms of casulities it took the union two men to kill 1 confederate, and they had at some points 3 times the soldiers. Robert E Lee is a much better leader than any yankee general, on top of the fact, the south adored Jefferson Davis, were as all the yankees hated Lincoln until he tied the Confederates at the battle of Anietnam(were the Union had more soldiers) Which resulted in the Anicipation Proclamation. Freeing all slaves in the confederacy. But, to all y'all who believe the war was about slavery, let me point this out, until the 13th ammendment the states of Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia were still useing slaves. Anyhow, even after the war, which involved the damn yankee general Sherman came and robed, raped, and executed unarmed southners.
Time to take a trip on the fact machine!!! WHEEE!!!
Point one.
Antietam. Its spelled Antietam.
Point two. Antietam was TECHNICALLY a Union victory, because Lee pulled his troops back across the Potomac. THough in reality, it was a draw. Then, Lincoln called this a union victory in order to justify the EMANCIPATION* proclomation, which was actually part of the battle in itself.
Lincoln did this for THREE reasons.
1. To keep Britain from recognizing the south by appealing to the strong british antislavery feeling.
2. to encourage blacks to join the war effort and fight for the union.
3. to revive morale in the north by giving Northerners another reason to fight other than preserving the Union.
True, every Confederate killed about two yankees. Observe why. In a battle where the enemy has 3 times your forces and you stand in a straight line across from each other, you're gonna hit stuff. ALOT of stuff, no matter how great of a marksman you were, or weren't.
Point 3.
Lincoln WAS on the verge of losing his presidency at the re-election. I will admit that. Ex- Union General McClellan was most likely going to become president. The factor that changed this was NOT Antietam, but instead, the taking of Atlanta, Georgia.
The morale boost created by Sherman's capture of Atlanta caused Lincoln to earn enough favor to beat McClellan. In fact, Lincoln earned 78% of the vote from the Union army. If the Union hated Lincoln sooooo much, then why did they decide to vote for him instead of a showboating Union General?
Point 4. Robert E Lee was an AMAZING general. I have no doubt in my mind that he was great. I DO want to bring up though, the fact that Lee was ORIGINALLY asked by Lincoln to lead the Union Army. He declined though because he did not want to deal with the guilt assosciated with fighting his own relatives and countrymen.
Point 5.
NOWHERE in there did I say that the Civil war was fought over Slavery. It wasn't. The main cause of the civil war is often mistaken to be slavery, when instead the war was started because the South wanted to secede from the union, the north wouldnt let them and the SOuth fought the North for individual state's rights. Not Slaves.
Point 6.
General Sherman's "March to the Sea" had little to do with the southerners getting abused after the Sherman passed through. Instead, there was a group called the "bummers". The bummers included newly freed blacks, union deserters, AND confederate deserters. Bummers are the ones that Robbed, raped and murdered, not legitimate Union soldiers. Unless by robbed, you mean "Livestock, crops, weapons, and valuables were seized by Union troops." THAT, is Strategy right there. By seizing all of the Souther possessions, the Union soldiers were crippling the Confederates in the area.
Point 7.
The Union won. Last time I checked, the South is still part of the United States. Why? Because when they tried to secede, we fought back and stopped them.
Facts + Argument = Another Union Victory.
