I have received premission from my loving wife to build a new desktop for myself. Anyone have some suggestions as to what cool parts I can get. I'm thinking about a 17" flat panel w/DVI connection. A mid range PCI-e graphics card, possibly supporting SLI. At least 1 GB RAM, not sure if it'll be dual channel or DDR2 though. My biggest buy will be the Motherboard and Processor. I'm torn between a Pentium D, Core 2 Duo or the AMD 64 or 64 X2. I saw a nice article on tomhardware where they overclocked a pentium d 850 (3.2 GHz) to over 4 GHz without any stability problems. I think they got the whole system for under 700 as well.
Anyway post your suggestions.

If you wanna go all out on gaming, i think a nice GE force graphics card would be in order. Also, with the pentium, i would go with the core duo. Ram will be fine at 1GB, i would actually put a 2GB in their just in case, thought it can get a little pricy.

There'll definitely be a gaming potential but I'm also looking down the road for a vista upgrade as well as the normal video editing. My primary concern is making sure that I can run Vista. With most of the hardware I've mentioned I know I should be ok. It's the little details of Intel Vs AMD that I need to overcome. I'm pretty certain it'll have a mid range PCI-e NVidia card. I'm on the fence as to whether I should allow for SLI in the future, as that drives the cost of the mainboard up a bit. It seems most boards that support Pentium D's do not support SLI so if I go that route I'm out an SLI set-up.

That'll run games just fine and dandy. However MS just announced that they recomment 2GB of RAM for Vista. I've been running the beta of Vista for months on 1GB and it's fine.

I'll probably upgrade to vista once I see the pricing. Most likely mid next year to see if it comes down in price and to let them work out some bugs. I'm really stoked about my new machine. I got the e-mail this morning that all the parts have shipped.

Like I said, I've been Beta testing Vista for quite some time now. It's pretty cool. Definitely a lot more stable than other versions of windows...
